Portrait Photography Tips

When taking people’s portraits, there are several portrait photography tips you can take advantage of to improve your shots. These involve lighting, setting and processing that affects the portrait’s final appearance.

One of the first portrait photography tips is to carefully consider the lighting for your shot. If you are going to be doing an outdoor portrait, it is better to take your pictures on either cloudy days, early in the morning or late in the afternoon or evening. These times allow you to get a softer light for the picture, create nice contrast and captures shadows. If you shoot in the middle of the day, around noon, the light will be harsh and will not make for a quality portrait.

The setting for your portrait is critical to capture the personality of the individual that you are shooting. Whether indoors or outdoors, have the client involved in choosing the background and the props that will be used in the shot. This will make it more personal and you will truly capture your subject.

Another one of the portrait photography tips that you can use involves processing. Make sure that you allow several choices for your client in the type of appearance that the final picture will have. One example could be to have choices for the color tone of the picture, whether it’s full color, black and white or a sepia tone. This allows you to add extra creativity, a unique appearance and give the client the perfect portrait.
